Dr. Sherman, Former Pres. Of the University of Liberia, is Dead 4 June 04 Dr. Mary Antoinette Brown Sherman, former President of the University of Liberia, died Thursday, 3 June after protracted illness, according to family sources. An astute administrator, courageous academic and principled educator, Mrs. Sherman led the University in standards, and it has not recovered since she was dismissed by military dictator Samuel K. Doe in the early 1980s. Mrs. Sherman is known for resisting pressure to grant Doe a PhD., and at one time, in an encounter with the military ruler, told him following threats on her, “Mr. President, there are some things greater than death.” She maintained her integrity despite harassment from the military junta, later leaving the country for the US. Mrs Sherman stood against political manipulation from various presidents to protect the integrity of the University, now in shambles in professional and infrastructural terms. She was a gallant fighter for democratic principles and fairness, winning respect from students and faculty and will be greatly missed by all those who share her vision of professional integrity, fairness and justice _____________________
